2020 TVs on the Horizon

by Dale Dauterive

1. 8K

Wait, didn’t we all just upgrade to 4K TVs? There’s more “k’s” out there?!?

You bet. The TV industry never sits still, and you can expect to see more and more 8K sets hitting the shelves in 2020. There still isn’t anywhere near the same amount of 8K content that there is for 4K, so it will probably still be quite some time before 8K sets or content become the standard. That means you’ve got some time still, but don’t be surprised if there’s an even bigger 8K push throughout 2020.

2. OLED

Sure, yes, of course we know that OLED isn’t new -- you could go right out and buy an OLED TV right now if you wanted to.

That doesn’t mean that OLED further expanding isn’t right on the horizon. In fact, Vizio is launching its first OLED TV next year, and with Vizio jumping on board it means that OLED tech is going to be available to more people, and at lower price points.

3. Right to the Edge

Edge-to-edge screens have been the talk of mobile phones for some time, but 2020 might just be when that conversation becomes the talk of the town in the TV space. According to a patent, LG has curved edge displays in the pipeline. Samsung also trademarked a zero bezel QLED, so the TV manufacturing wars could really be going edge-to-edge next year.

4. Mirco-nomics

Everybody here is all too familiar with the QLED vs OLED vs LED battles, but there may yet be another option to enter the marketplace: Micro LED. Samsung has said that Micro LED will be ready for consumers in 2020 -- and the technology does offer benefits over the pricey OLED panels that are all the rage these days.

5. Cheaper TVs!

The TV market is quite cyclical. As new, more high-tech screens hit the market, the price of older -- even if they aren’t that old! -- sets goes down. If you’ve been waiting to buy a TV, 2020 is looking to be a good year to finally get into the 4K game if you haven’t already. There were a lot of really, really good TVs that came out in 2019 that you can come check out, as well!

We aren’t really sure where 2019 went, but 2020 is already right around the corner! These are just a few possible TVs to keep an eye out for -- but there’s always room for surprises in the marketplace. And if you want to stay up-to-date on TV trends and happenings, be sure to keep checking back to our blog throughout the New Year!
