What You Need to Know About Built-in Dishwashers

Since the invention of the dishwasher, cleaning up after dinner has been much more convenient. And with the even newer, built-in dishwashers of today, cleanup is almost effortless.

What is a built-in dishwasher?

Built-in or integrated dishwashers require permanent plumbing installation and are designed to fit into a cabinet space located near your sink. The integrated design almost makes your dishwasher look hidden, especially if you opt for a panel-ready dishwasher to match your cabinetry.

Most built-in dishwashers have two racks with places for silverware, cups, and other dishware. Just make sure to avoid putting these 10 things in your dishwasher!

Do built-in dishwashers come only in standard sizes?

The simple answer is no, built-in dishwashers come in many sizes. The more complex answer is that built-in dishwashers come in standard, compact, and tall tub configurations.

  • Standard built-in dishwashers are 24 inches wide, 35 inches tall, and can wash between 12 and 16 place settings in a single load.
  • Compact built-in dishwashers are 18 inches wide and clean 8 to 10 place settings per load (ideal for two or three people or for compact kitchens).
  • Tall tub dishwashers are the same size as standard built-in dishwashers, but they have super capacities and enough space to hold platters and cookie sheets.

How quiet are built-in dishwashers?

Running water is always going to make noise, and the same goes for your dishwasher. But if you’re looking to run the dishes in a sleepy household or during a party, then you need a quiet-operating dishwasher with a sound reduction package.

What does that mean? It all boils down to the number of decibels for which your built-in dishwasher is rated. A good rule of thumb: the lower the number, the quieter your dishwasher will be. So, look for integrated dishwashers with a decibel range between 40 and 50 dBAs.

And if quiet is an absolute must, keep in mind that hard food disposers and self-cleaning filters create additional noise.

Are built-in dishwashers energy efficient?

The quick answer is that built-in dishwashers with the Energy Star label are energy efficient and will save you plenty on your utility bill. But if you’re looking to save energy on your appliances, other features will help you with your goal.

  • Soil sensors adjust the amount of water and cycle time needed depending on the amount of dirt and food particles sensed.
  • Half-load or upper rack cycles will only wash one part of your dishwasher, which uses less water and reduces time spent washing.
  • Eco wash uses less water throughout the cycle and still gets the job done (make sure to presoak stuck-on stains!).
  • Speed wash cycles have shorter wash cycles that save on costs over time.
  • Fan dry, or drying without heat, will air-dry your dishes without using heat.
